Producing Fonts

Producing Fonts

The King Fahd Glorious Qur’an Printing Complex pays great attention to technologies and computer programs that can be harnessed to serve the Glorious Qur’an and its Sciences. The Complex also seeks to use technology to serve all the works and tasks assigned to it, including:

  1. Adding Some Symbols of the Uthmanic Script to the Arabic Unicode
Since the Complex is interested in supporting the computer technologies that serve the Glorious Qur'an and its Sciences, and as the Complex has found a need to record some additions in the international standard code (Unicode), in order to insert some signs of the Uthmanic Script with the international organization (Unicode), due to the importance of the said additions in terms of producing the computer fonts related to the Qur’anic text, according to the requirements of the Uthmanic Script rules, the Complex has coordinated with (Unicode) organization concerning this topic. The approval of both requests of the Complex has been issued on (14/10/2010 AD), regarding
– the availability of writing the successive nunation (Tanween) in its three conditions (Al-Fath, Ad-Dhamm, and Al-Kasr) as per the suggestion of the Complex.
– Correction of the English names of the three Tanweens, so that they become:

  1. Supporting the Islamic Software Environment with Computer Fonts
Among the interests of the King Fahd Glorious Qur'an Printing Complex, regarding supporting the Islamic software environment with computer fonts for the text of the Noble Musḥaf in the Uthmanic Script in conformity with al-Madinah al-Nabawiyyah Musḥaf, in the form of (TTF) as audited and free of errors, and easily circulated and used in software, computer applications, text processors, Internet websites, etc., the Complex has initiated to produce a set of Uthmanic Script fonts, which are computer fonts compatible with the standard coding (Unicode). It is a global system that enables data to be transferred via the different systems and devices without any distorted view, whatever the number of the manufacturers of systems, the languages, and the countries through which such data pass. The said computer fonts have been assigned to write the text of the Glorious Musḥaf in compliance with the Uthmanic Script of al-Madinah al-Nabawiyyah Musḥaf in the different Narrations. The Complex has so far completed eight Narrations, namely: أنجز المجمع منها حتى الآن ثمان روايات هي:
– The Narration of Hafs on the authority of Asim al-Kufi – the Narration of Shu’bah on the authority of Asim al-Kufi
– the Narration of Qalun on the authority of Nafi’ al-Madani – the Narration of Warsh on the authority of Nafi’ al-Madani
– the Narration of al-Susi on the authority of Abu Amr Al-Basri – the Narration of al-Duri on the authority of Abu Amr Al-Basri
– the Narration of Qunbul on the authority of Ibn Kathir Al-Makki – the Narration of al-Bazzi on the authority of Ibn Kathir Al-Makki
Among the most important features of the Uthmanic Script fonts produced by the Complex is that they are compatible with the International Standard Coding (Unicode), so that:
– the file size is small (one file does not exceed 250 Kilobyte).
– the fonts are reviewed and approved by the Scholarly Committee to Review al-Madinah al-Nabawiyyah Musḥaf at the KFGQPC.
– They were fully typeset using the normal keyboard, without inserting any symbols that are not compatible with the standard system (Unicode), which is beneficial in using the mentioned texts in the counting processes of words, letters, and terms related to adjustment and calligraphy.
– A Word document has been produced that include the full text of the Glorious Qur'an of each Musḥaf, according to the Uthmanic Script that is compliant with al-Madinah al-Nabawiyyah Musḥaf. Digital Signature has been made to the said document.
– The said computer fonts are compatible with all the operating systems, Internet browsers, and programs that support the fonts of (Open Type).
The Complex has also produced: The Uthmanic Script Musḥaf font - Hafs, for smart devices: It is a computer font that is not used for viewing the complete page of the Musḥaf in compliance with al-Madinah al-Nabawiyyah Musḥaf. However, it is used to view the Qur'anic text in the Uthmanic Script on smart devices in terms of Ayahs only, such as displaying the text of Ayahs in the search results, displaying the text of Ayahs in Al-Tafseer Al Muyassar, and other Qur’an interpretation books.
It is worth noting that all the said computer fonts have been designed and programed in the Information Technology and Computer Department of the Complex, their letters have been written, and their different combinations have been built by the calligrapher of al-Madinah al-Nabawiyyah Musḥaf Dr. ‘Uthmān Ṭaha , and have been reviewed and approved by the Scholarly Committee for Reviewing al-Madinah al-Nabawiyyah Musḥaf at the Complex.
Work is underway to produce computer fonts for the other Narrations.
In addition, the said computer fonts have been made available on the computer fonts group website of the Complex: http://fonts.quranComplex.gov.sa

  1. Supporting the Development Environment for the Fonts of the Glorious Qur'an text in the Uthmanic Script
Supporting the Development Environment for the Fonts of the Glorious Qur'an text in the Uthmanic Script: This includes working to insert some signs of Uthmanic Script within the international coding (Unicode).

  1. Production of Another Group of Arabic Fonts
Production of Another Group of Arabic Fonts, which contribute to enriching the Arabic Fonts Library, such as:
A. Computer font (Naskh Font): In its two types, normal and bold:
It is the first of a group of computer fonts that are produced in King Fahd Glorious Qur’an Printing Complex in Madinah. It is a computer font that was built in accordance with the unified international coding “Unicode”. The Naskh Font is distinguished from many other computer fonts by the beauty of calligraphy and its combinations. It took into account the application of a number of well-known rules in Arabic calligraphy, such as:
– taking into account writing the letter (ع) - followed by the letter (أ) or the letter (ل) - in the optimal way according to the following shape: (عامر – على) Which is written in other computer fonts like this: (عامر – على).
Taking into account the way of writing the edges and their different structures according to their order in a single word. For example, when writing a word that has two or more consecutive edges, it is necessary to distinguish between the edges, so that they do not appear as the edges of the letter (س), such as: (سنترك، تتناول، سنستدرجهم).
- The shape of the edges that follow the letter (ل) directly was also taken into consideration, such as: (النور، التوراة).
Likewise, the shape of the edge preceding the letter (ر), such as (سفير، عبر). The said letters appear in the following form in many other fonts, such as: (سنترك، تتناول، سنستدرجهم)، (النور، التوراة)، (سفير، عبر).
- Using the singular letter (هـ) shape that is used to denote the year when writing the Hijri date such as: (1/1/1430هـ), without the need to include it as a symbol.
- Determining the diacritics of letters and words accurately, such as:
لَا خَيْرَ فِي الْعِلمِ إِنْ لَمْ يَرْقَ صَاحِبُهُ عَلى أَساسٍ مِنَ الأَخْلاقِ فِي الصِّغَرِ
العِلمُ كَالغَيْثِ وَالأَخْلاقُ مَزْرَعَةٌ                          إِنْ تَفْسُدِ الأَرضُ تَذْهَبْ نِعْمَةُ المَطَرِ
This is compared to the following figure:
لَا خَيْرَ فِي الْعِلمِ إِنْ لَمْ يَرْقَ صَاحِبُهُ          عَلى أَساسٍ مِنَ الأَخْلاقِ فِي الصِّغَرِ
العِلمُ كَالغَيْثِ وَالأَخْلاقُ مَزْرَعَةٌ              إِنْ تَفْسُدِ الأَرضُ تَذْهَبْ نِعْمَةُ المَطَرِ
There are many other technical remarks that were taken into account in the Naskh font.
B. Symbols Font
It is a computer font synonymous with Naskh Font, which was previously produced by the King Fahd Glorious Quran Printing Complex, written by the calligrapher of Al-Madinah Musḥaf, Shaikh ‘Uthmān Ṭaha . ! # p o q n m l k j i h  v u t s r g f e d c b a ; < y x z w . ] I N O $ P Q X V ? @
Upon writing the phrases and texts, it was taken into account designing two forms of the font, one is compound, such as: and the other in the normal Naskh font, such as , to choose the appropriate one. There is also a list showing the forms of all the phrases that are available in the mentioned font, the Character Code and the name of the key that can be pressed on the keyboard to get the required phrase.
C. Kalimat Al-Tawhid Font:
