Shaikh Uthman Abduh Taha, the Calligrapher of al-Madinah al-Nabawiyyah Musḥafs

He was born in the countryside of Aleppo in 1352 AH, corresponding to 1934 AD. His father is Shaikh Abduh Hussain Taha, who was the Imam and preacher of the mosque and the Shaikh of Qur'an Schools (Kuttab) in the Country. He learned the principles of calligraphy from his father who was proficient in (Ruq’a calligraphy).

He joined the elementary, middle and high education levels in the city of Aleppo at the Shari’a College/ (al-Khasrawiyah). During this period, he learned from the masters of calligraphy in the city of Aleppo, Professors Mohammad Ali al-Mawlawi, Mohammad al-Khatib, Hussain Hosni “al-Turki”, Shaikh Abdul-Jawad al-Khattat, and Ibrahim Al Rifa’i (Calligrapher of Aleppo).

At University, He studied in the city of Damascus, and obtained Bachelor's Degree in Islamic Shari’a from Damascus University in 1383 AH, corresponding to 1964 AD, and a General Diploma from the Faculty of Education, Damascus University in 1384 AH, corresponding to 1965 AD.

In Damascus, he got acquainted with Professor Mohammad Badawi al-Dirani (Calligrapher of the Levant), and he learned a lot from him in the Persian and Thuluth calligraphies in 1379 AH, corresponding to 1960 AD, until 1967 AD.

He used to meet with the Iraqi calligrapher, Professor Hashem Mohammad al-Baghdadi, when he visited Damascus, and received many exercises and comments from him about the Thuluth and Naskh calligraphies.

He obtained Ijaza in good calligraphy from the late Chief Calligraphers in the Islamic world, Mr. Hamed al-Amidi, in 1392 AH, corresponding to 1973 AD.

He was appointed as a member of the International Jury for the Arabic Calligraphy competition, held in Istanbul every three years, since 1408 AH, corresponding to 1988 AD.

He learned script and ornamentation from Professor Sami Burhan, may Allah protect him, and then the late Professor Na’im Ismail.

He was appointed as a calligrapher for King Fahd Glorious Qur’an Printing Complex in Madinah since 1408 AH, corresponding to 1988 AD, and a calligrapher of Musḥaf al-Madinah al-Nabawiyyah.
